Blog 8 English IV: English Lenguage Challenges

Imagen
Hi everyone! I hope everyone is okay in whatever you are right now Before I start the main topic of this blog I must say sorry for the lateness of this post but this week has been a mess between family issues and a lot of work from the different classes I have in the university. My experience about english in university has been great because I have learned a lot, especially with the blogs because with this task I can improve myself and in this way the english stays in my mind and I don’t forget it. Also, the teachers that I have been in the class III and IV of english, they are so nice with the students and I like the way they are teaching us with different activities in the class or different homework.  The part I want to improve in english is my pronunciation and be more fluent with what I want to say because sometimes it is really difficult to express what I want to say in spanish and for these issues I have I do and I will do different exercises, like using Duolingo fre...

Blog 7 English IV: Changes to my study programme

Imagen
Hi, lovely to see you again!  Today I’m going to talk about the changes I would like to make to my study programme. I’m studying architecture in the university of Chile and actually my career has 5 years and a half to finish it. The first change I would like to make is upgrading the buildings of the faculty because the rooms are so cold in winter and so hot in summer and that is really uncomfortable. The reason for this situation before is for the high ceiling and the composition of the walls, but the trouble to fix these buildings is that they are heritage buildings… so it is complicated. The best solution for now is to put an air conditioner in the classrooms.  The second change I would like to make to the study programme is to put an obligatory class of physical education in all of the semester because with that way all the students can be healthy and the physical education help to release stress and this is really good especially in this career. The third change I w...

Blog 6 English IV: Time travel to the future

Imagen
Hi everyone! How are you doing? I hope everything is going well :) Today I'm going to talk about time travel to the future. I would like to go to the time when I'm already working as an architect and finally living in my own house with my boyfriend, because I really want to know if I can make my wishes come true, if I’m happy with my work or I really change my mind and I’m working on other stuff, I don’t know… but at the same time that’s make me feel anxious or scary about the future because maybe I wasn’t able to achieve my dreams. Everything can happen… If the future I would be seeing is all great and awesome like I imagine right now, I probably would like to stay there because that situation would be something that I’ve always dreamed about. I’d stay because I think I would already have all the memories of the thing that I’ve lived until that time but If I don’t retain  those memories then I prefer not to stay in the future, and instead I’d live in the present.  I th...

Blog 5 English IV: My Future Job

Imagen
Hello again and welcome to this new blog! And I am sorry for being late… Tonight in this blog I’m going to talk about my future job and that's gonna be architecture, the same thing that I'm studying right now. I imagine that I will have my own office of architecture and I will do amazing projects like Zaha Hadid did, and hopefully do these projects with friends that I have known in the university because I think they are marvelous.  Zaha Hadid is my favorite architect because she did a fluid architecture that looks so soft and awesome to the eye, like the picture down below. Also, I think this job will be a kind of outdoors and indoors thing because I must know how is the ground where I’m going to build and also I have to know about the people who live in the area to make a proper project and after that I will be able to make the architecture plans. I see my future job like I said before but also I can imagine the stress associated with this projects but the joy to see the r...

Blog 4 English IV: My pets

Imagen
Hello everyone!  Today I'm going to talk about my pets and my boyfriend’s pet. In all my life I have had 4 dogs and now I just have one, regrettably. First of all I had a German Shepherd called ‘Igor’ . He was with me from when I was 3 years old to 16 years old when he died because he was too old and he was in pain because he developed different health problems because of his age and we decided to euthanize him. It was a difficult time for all of us but it was the right thing to do for him.  Five years before Igor died we got a new dog, it was a poodle, and my brothers and I called him ‘Pipo’ and he was my favorite pet of all I had because we were so close to each other. I spent a beautiful time with him until one day my neighbor’s dog killed him. It was the worst time for me because I thought that I was going to be with him till he goes old but it didn't happen. Pipo Two years before Pipo died we got two German Shepherds, we called one ‘Dinka’ and the other one we call...

Blog 3 English IV: "A Building that I Admire"

Imagen
Hi everyone! Welcome back :D Today I’m going to talk about “A building that I admire” and that it’s “Heydar Aliyev Center” by Zaha Hadid. I really love this building because of its curves of the building skin, they are so soft and match with the context flowing with the floor as you can see in the picture. Well, this building it’s located in the capital of Azerbijan called Baku and its program is made of offices, a hotel, a mall, a theater and in the center of the building is a large square to spend a great time with friends and family. The main idea of this building is to represent the sensitivity of the azerí culture and the optimism of a nation to represent the future and the avant-garde in architecture on its lands. Finally, the principal material for this beautiful building and its skin is the fiberglass reinforced concrete and the fiberglass reinforced polyester. These materials were ideal as they allow a high plasticity of the design of the building with its curve...

Blog 2 English IV: The best Holidays ever

Imagen
Hi guys!  Today i’m gonna talk about the best holidays I’ve ever had in all my life. This holiday was in February 2020. My triplets siblings, some friends and I went to Coquimbo-La Serena, celebrating the end of the exhausting semester of university (especially me because my semester lasted a lot). We went on a bus to the city and we stayed at the house of a friend.  Wetland - “El Culebrón”   The main idea was to stay there for 2 weeks but at the end we stayed 3 weeks because we had some great moments, like visiting the “Culebrón” wetland. It has a lot of ducks, dragonflies, and different types of birds… I took a lot of pictures of that moment but my sister has all the pictures in an HDD and she is not with me now… so I can't post my own pictures, sorry. Also, we went to a pub-restaurant called “El muelle” and they served 1 Kg. of french fries with different toppings and that was amazing and delicious. I highly recommend that place if you can go. The pub-restaurant...

Blog 1 English IV: A country I would like to visit

Imagen
Hello everyone, today I am gonna talk about a country I would like to visit and it is South Korea. -Changdeokgung palace- I’d really like to visit South Korea because I like the language because I feel it is soft to pronounce and easy to learn but the writing can be difficult inasmuch for our different type of alphabet; I like the city because the streets are clean, It is safer to go out than Chile, the streets have a nice lighting and they have interesting monuments and architecture that I want to visit, like Changdeokgung palace, Dongdaemun design plaza and park, Jogyesa temple and more; and I like the food looks really amazing with plenty of seasoning and always accompanied by a plate of rice. I consider it a really interesting culture that we all must visit, learn and respect the life they have because It is totally different in comparison to our country with our customs, language and lifestyle. -Dongdaemun design plaza and park- by Zaha Hadid Thank you for reading and see you next...

Blog 8: A subject I enjoy studying this semester

Imagen
Hi everyone, I hope all of you have a great long weekend. Today I’m gonna talk about a subject I enjoy this semester and that it’s “architecture and earthquake”. In this class we talk about the properties of an earthquake, the effects it causes and the different types of systems that we can employ in a structure to resist earthquakes. This subject is really interesting because in Chile it’s important to make buildings to resist earthquakes because we have the Nazca and South American tectonic plates. These tectonic plates in the moment they interact, by the process of subduction, with each other produce earthquakes.  Another theme that I enjoyed in this class was to learn about “The San Ramón fault” because it passes near where I live. This fault crosses through the districts Vitacura, Las Condes, La Reina, Peñalolén, La Florida and Puente Alto. The fault is a vertical ground displacement and generally it is activated when there is an earthquake.  I really like this sub...

Blog 7: An Expert in My Field

Imagen
Hi everyone, sorry I'm late, I was too busy those days and I forgot completely. Well today i’m gonna talk about a great expert in architecture and she is Zaha Hadid. She was born in Iraq in 1950 and she died in London in 2016 because of a heart attack at the age of 66.  She lived most of her life in London where she decided to study architecture.  Her characteristic style of architecture was deconstructivism, a style that consists in not following the rules, playing with the different volumenes of a structure, using different geometric figures for a one project and changing completely the composition of the structure of a building. In all of her trajectory as an architect she received three important rewards for our profession, which are: Mies Van Der Rohe in 2003, Pritzker prize in 2004 she was the first woman to receive this reward and the last one is Praemium Imperiale in 2009. Now I’m going to show two beautiful works of her and it is: Fire station in Vitra in 1993 ...

Blog 6: How Can I Major/ Career Make the World a Better Place

Imagen
Hi everybody. I am glad to read you again. :D Today I’m going to talk about ‘How my major can make the world a better place’ As you might know I’m studying architecture at the University of Chile. When I decided to study this career I only thought it’s a pretty career because it’s about buildings and their designs, nothing so elaborate, but now I think It’s a beautiful career because you can make a home for others who need it, make different designs to create a better city with more connection, more vegetation, building a city for the persons that’s all that matters.  In the future I see myself with a group of architects changing the vision of the city, with more green areas for the recreation of the people and the health of us and the future generations with a better air, nature and city. I hope you really enjoy it.

Blog 5: A photograph I like

Imagen
Hi everyone I hope you are okay these days :D Today I am gonna talk about my favorite photograph and it is this one. As you can see, I am with my boyfriend and one of his beautiful cats “Valek” and we were laying out in bed living the moment while Valek was purring. The picture was taken by my boyfriend Leonardo about 4 years ago, I guess. During this time I was recently making a connection with cats because, at that moment, I had never had contact with a cat because my parents didn’t like them. For these reasons I was so excited when the cat started purring :D.  I really like this picture because it reminds me of a relaxing moment with no problems, a moment with so much love that you want to rewind time and live it again. It is those moments that you don’t want to pass the time and live there forever. That’s all my history about my favorite photograph. What do you think about it?

Blog 4: Meal or food I really like

Imagen
Hi everyone, long time! For today I am going to talk about my favorite food which is Lasagna. It is an amazing food because it has so many dough layers, a lot of tomato sauce and has a layer that looks like milk but it doesn’t and I really don't know what it is because my mother said it is a secret. I hopefully know that secret layer of milk, because when I live alone I wanna cook this food and remember my mom doing it with all of her love. Also, I think I like it because this food is made for special days or moments, for example a birthday or a family meeting. An another favorite meal it is Roasted Milk and it is an amazing dessert for the favorite food, and I mention it later because it is a dessert so soft and sweet to eat, and it is prepared with ingredients we usually have in the house, that it’s milk and eggs for the Roasted Milk and sugar with water to create the beautiful caramel to put over the dessert.  That’s all for today, thank you for reading me a...

Blog 3: My favorite piece of technology

Imagen
Welcome to my third blog!   Today I am going to talk about my favorite piece of technology. Day by day we use technology for everything and one piece I use for everything is my computer. Here is where I work in my university stuff, where I chat with my friends, where I can watch movies, series or any video on YouTube, or use any other platform to recreate myself.  I have been with this mac computer since 2018. My parents gave it to me on Christmas because I would start university too soon and they wanted me to have a computer because they know the career of architecture has to do a lot of work on that device. I highly recommend this computer because I have never had an issue with it, It always works 24/7 and It will never let you down, perfect for the pandemic.  The pandemic and the university affected my life in many ways. The bad thing is the pandemic forces us all to use more technology, that's why I am always in front of the computer or any other kind of techno...

Blog 2: why did I choose this career?

Imagen
Hi, welcome to my second blog! Today I am going to talk about my dream jobs when I was a child and when I applied for the university. :D When I was little I wanted to be a cashier because I liked to pass the things in the barcode and I had a game where I could play to be a cashier. It was really fun. When I started to grow up and be in high school, so many people asked me ¿What do you want to study in the university when you do the PSU? and I answered ‘I really don’t know’ but I had two options: one was to be a doctor and the second one was to be an architect, and you now must think ‘but those careers are so opposite to each other’ and yeah I know. I chose medicine as an option because I like science, the cells, the body, the reactions inside of us, everything; but also I like drawing, the structure of a house, the space, the city and all about this career.  As I had these two options, I decided at that moment the score of my test would determine my future, and here I am in ...

Sofía Hafon

I was born in Santiago; Chile and I am twenty years old. I have two siblings and we are a little similar because we are triplets, also I have 4 siblings more, all they are older than me. I live with my father, mother and my triplets siblings. My father is descendent from China and his parents were from China who came to live in Chile before my father was born. My mother is from Chile and her parents too. I, unfortunately, never met any of my grandparents. When I was little, I studied in 'Pedro de Valdivia' school until first grade, then I went to 'Patrona Señora de los Urdes' school until seventh grade and finally I studied in the 'Almenar del Maipo' school where I finished my high school. My two siblings and I had to change so many times of schools because we suffered bullying for our ethnicity. Then I came to study architecture here in 'Universidad de Chile'. The hobbies I have are reading a good book of my preference like 'Me before you' whi...
